Edín Vélez: Biographical Information
editEdin Vélez: Born 1951 Arecibo, Puerto Rico Edin Velez attended the University of Puerto Rico from 1968 - 1969 and left to study painting at the School of Fine Arts of Institute of Puerto Rican Culture from 1969 - 1970. Feeling he the need to be innovative in his art making and a desire to work in unexplored territory Vélez was drawn to video. He When Edin Vélez first moved to New York City in 1971 he worked at Global Village for John Reilly and Rudi Stern in a loft at Broome and Mercer. This is where he learned to work with video: shooting, editing and working at the video theater. The video theater charged admission for people to view video displayed on 12 monitors that showed three channels of video that would switch to different patterns and configurations utilizing a machine created by C.T. Lui. At this time the media was electronically unstable so it could not be broadcasted. Global Village was one of the first groups to develop and experiment with closed circuit video, the new portable video technology

Series of three abstract, scan process analog synthesizer videos.
While studying painting in Puerto Rico, Vélez read Marshall McLuhan’s theories on media and art and decided to move to New York to explore the possibilities of the new medium of video as a personal art form. In New York he became part of a small but close-knit emerging video art community that developed and defined the original parameters of the genre of video art.
This community included video artists such as: Woody and Steina Vasulka founders of The Kitchen, Nam Jun Paik, and Juan Downey. During the early 1980’s he researched concepts of visual perception and tried to adapt them to my videomaking. Out of this research came an interest in layering multiple images into one video frame. This form of visual representation, which he helped create, has become a common filmic language. It has migrated to mainstream media where it is employed in Hollywood films, music videos and commercials.
His work has been shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art (NYC), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Louvre, Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), the Tate (London), the Mori Museum (Tokyo), and at major festivals such as The Whitney Biennial, Dokumenta 8 (Germany), Sao Paolo Biennial (Brazil) and on broadcast television, PBS (U.S.A.), ARTE (France, Germany) and NHK (Japan). His video works are part of the curricula at many universities including New York University, Stanford University, and the University of California at Santa Cruz.
His video essay on the Guatemalan highlands Meta Mayan has been included in Harvard University’s Department of Visual and Environmental Studies list of 100 Films and Videos to See. Archive of his papers and videos has been purchased by Stanford University and is available to researchers at their Green Library Department of Special Collections. In recent years art work to include the production of narrative film and large scale photographic prints, developing new methods to exhibit video using state-of-the-art solid state storage digital video frames in installations and sculptural boxes.

Delirio Tropical (currently in development)
Delirio Tropical is an experimental, ninety-minute narrative video that takes place in Puerto Rico in the late 1980s. It interweaves and layers the personal history of a twenty-something Puerto Rican woman, Alicia, with sociopolitical events deriving from the most controversial political event in recent Puerto Rican history: the Cerro Maravilla assassinations.
