The Five Pillars of Wikipedia

- Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia - Wikipedia has a neutral point of view - Wikipedia is free content - Wikipedians should interact in a respectful and civil manner - Wikipedia does not have firm rules

Pillar 1 (wikipedia is an online encyclopedia): Wikipedia is not an advertising platform, a blog, an experiment or collection of random date or a search engne. In Addiction, wikipedia is not a dictionary, newspaper, book etc. Wikipedia is a website where you can find summaries of virtually any topic.

Pillar 2 (offering a neutral perspective): Topic articles should discuss and evaluate all relevant points and perspectives in a balanced and impartial way. iF articles have multiple point they should all be presented accurately. It's important not to suggest that one version of the story is the truth. All information included should be based on published sources and they should be cited.

Pillar 3 ( free content that anyone can edit, use, modify, distribute): Every thing on wikipedia is free to use, meaning information shared should be ok to share freely. Copying and pasting copyrighted material is plagiarism and a copyright violation. Information on topics based on other sources should be written in your own words. Close paraphrasing should be avoided.

Pillar 4 ( wikipedia editors should interact in a respectful and civil manner with each other): when someone edit or removes your contribution don't panic, this is part of the process. Editors can use the talk pages to interact with each other. Disagreement should be handled with core wikipedia values in mind. - respect - avoid personal attacks - if you don't agree with someones edits, changing it back will began an edit war. If this happened talk to your instructor - all your edits are saved meaning if someone changes them don't panic as the instructor can see the previous edits - don't act maliciously and act in good face - online communication makes it difficult to understand someones tone so remember to always replay in a polite and respectful manner

Pillar 5 (wikipedia has changing rules): rules on wikipedia will always continue changing in their wording with their interpretation are likely to change. The values principles and spirit of wikipedia rules are more important the their wording it can also be the case that to improve something, sometimes exception must be made. Be confident in updating articles, take initiative and try new thing as any mistakes can be fixed through reverting to prior saves. Communications is crucial so that editors can share what they're doing, what they want to do, what they have done and why.
