[1]FGM is very dangerous, not only does it lead to infection, it can cause a female to lose most feeling in her genitals. Meaning that only the males are to experience the pleasure of sexual intercourse. All types of FGM include the damage and removal of the normal functioning external genitalia. The chance of infection and complications depend on different factors, the extent of the cutting, the skill of the operator, the cleanliness of the tools used on the surrounding area, and the physical condition of the child. The types of immediate complications include the following; Death, Hemorrhaging, Shock, Injury to surrounding organs, urine retention, infection, and severe pain. There are two types of long-term complications, these include; failure to heal, abscess formation, dermoid cyst, keloids, stenosis of the artificial opening to the vagina, complications of labor and delivery, and psychological and sexual effects. This procedure is illegal even in certified hospitals. Some call this female circumcision, but it is much more dangerous and far more difficult than the circumcision of the male genitalia. In a simpler sense, it is the exact same as male circumcision based on the fact that they are both procedures that are considered cutting rituals that are performed on a child with no definite health benefits. This procedure is not a requirement for most religions, unlike the male circumcision which is required under some religions. FGM is mainly ritualistic or done for a certain cultural value. This procedure is illegal, and it is so because it is dangerous. Studies have shown that it does much more harm than good.
