Jeffrey Edwards[1] (born November 12, 1997), better known by his stage name J-Soul, is a Canadian singer from Toronto, Ontario. J-Soul gained recognition following the release of his 2016 mixtape November Twelve, leading to a deal with Cash Money Records. He is best known for his singles "Slow Wine" and "Toronto Plaza Motel",[a] both released in 2016.

Early life

edit

Jeffrey Edwards was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in the Weston neighbourhood and attended Weston Collegiate Institute.[citation needed] He began making music at 10 years old.[2] Edwards experienced homelessness in 2015 after high school.[3]

Career

edit

In November 2015, Edwards released the track "Time" on SoundCloud under the name J-Soul. Shortly after, he released "Toronto Plaza Motel" and the mixtape November Twelve, both on January 8, 2016. This caught the attention of Cash Money co-founder Ronald "Slim" Williams, who personally reached out to him.[2] After meeting Slim and Birdman in Miami, J-Soul signed a deal with Cash Money Records in March 2016.[4][5]

In April 2016, "Toronto Plaza Motel"[a] was re-released as his first single through the label, named after the hotel he stayed at while homeless.[2] Speaking about it to HotNewHipHop, J-Soul said he "really tried to sing" and create a "different type of record".[3] The single "Slow Wine" was released on August 26, 2016, and its associated music video on September 6, 2016, which features a cameo from Birdman.[6] "Slow Wine" has been considered one of J-Soul's most popular songs.[3][7] On October 7, 2016, J-Soul released his EP Jane 2 Miami with features from Rich Gang label mates Birdman and Neno Calvin.

In 2017, feeling neglected by his label, J-Soul began working on music independently.[8] He self-released "Mod Ting" in February 2017,[9][7] and the mixtape L.I.S.A on November 1, 2017.[10][3] J-Soul departed Cash Money in 2019.[6] On September 19, 2019, J-Soul released his first album The Heartbreak Kid which included a track featuring fellow Toronto rapper Friyie.[8]
