Kim Abeles

Kim Abeles (born 1952, Richmond Heights, Missouri) is a Los Angeles based artist who is best known for her environmental, feminist, and geographical work. Primarily, her work is centered on civic and contemporary issues such as Feminism, HIV/AIDS, mental health, labor, and the urban environment. She is also known for her Smog Collectors Series, which brought national and international attention. The Smog Collectors depicted stenciled images after collecting smog and showcased pollution. Her projects have been exhibited in multiple museums such as: LACMA, Berkley Art Museum, MOCA, California African American Museum, Natural History Museum, and Yucan Art Museum.

Life and Education

Kim Abeles was born in 1952, Richmond Heights, Missouri. She studied and received her B.F.A. in Painting at Ohio University in 1974 and M.F.A. in Studio Art at University of California, Irvine in 1980. She is an Emeritus Professor at California State University, Northridge from 2010-present. Kim Abeles has taught at several schools including, but not limited to: California State University Northridge, California State University Los Angeles, and Otis School of Art and Design, Los Angeles
