The Battle of San Mateo was an important conflict of the Venezuelan War of Independence, in which a llanero army under the command of Spanish caudillo José Tomás Boves besieged republican forces commanded by Simón Bolívar for several days. The royalists attacked the city of San Mateo several times, but were ultimately defeated by the patriots with great difficulty.

Background edit

After revolting at the end of 1813, the bulk of the Venezuelan patriot army was fighting against José Ceballos. While this was happening, Boves gathered 20,000 llaneros, according to José Francisco de Heredia.
