Sun Tanning Sun tanning is described as darkening or tanning the skin darker than the skin’s natural complexion. There are various ways of tanning which includes exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from direct sunlight, chemical used process that is added on top of the skin, resulting in darkening the skin, and tanning lamps that is described to be an indoor tanning bed and have no need of direct sunlight for this process. Minimum exposure in direct sunlight creates a natural production of melanin and vitamin D by the body which protects the body by absorbing ultraviolet radiation. Too much exposure or over excessive tanning to the body will result in darkening the skin, sun burns, accelerated aging of the skin, and potential skin cancer in the future. There are two types of UV exposure: first is UVA radiation which is a oxidative stress oxidizing existing melanin in the body creating a darker melanin. UVA exposure does not lead to an increase of melanin nor does it protect again sun damage like sun burns or skin cancer. He second UV process is UVB which is an increase of melanin due to the body’s exposure from UV radiation. Skin’s darkening color due to the UV radiation are not permanent, but can last up to week or even months. Genetics play a big role of how much your skin reacts to direct sunlight. Those with a lighter complexion tend to burn more compared to those with more of a medium or even dark complexion due to the melanin in the body. Over exposure to UV radiation is known to cause sun burns, faster aging to the skin, mutate DNA, and in worst cases, can result in skin cancer.
