Jamshedpur, also known as Tatanagar is a major industrial city in Jharkhand, India. It is the largest city in the state and largest metropolitan city in eastern India, next to Kolkata and Patna. With a population of 659,000, the metropolitan area is home to 1.1 million people. Jamshedpur stands as 72nd largest in terms of city-proper population and 36th largest in metrpolitan-wise. Located on the confluence of Swarnarekha and Kharkai rivers, Jamshedpur is located on south-eastern part of Jharkhand and is near the state borders of West Bengal and Odisha.

Region around Jamshedpur, historically known as Singhhum have been influenced by the rule of Mughals, Rajputs, Sultanates and Zamindars. Historic temples, palaces, fortresses and mosques can be found throughout Jamshedpur, reflecting the region's deep history. However the area came under the prominence, after industrial development of Jamshedpur. In early years Jamshedpur became an important industrial center during the 1st and 2nd world wars for the Middle East and East Africa. Following independence of India, Jamshedpur experienced deadly communal violence in the 1960s and 1970s, changing the city forever. In the mid-1980s, statehood movement among the indigenous people increased, with mass rallies and political activism. Organized crimes increased, until it was repressed when Ajoy Kumar took power. On November 2000, Jamshedpur became part of the new Jharkhand state.

Jamshedpur has been selected as one of the cities for the Global Compact Cities Pilot Programme by United Nations, the only one to be selected in India as well as [South Asia]

As a well-known commercial and industrial center in eastern India, Jamshedpur is one of the most prosperous cities of India. The metropolitan economy is estimated at $20 billion (PPP GDP) and GDP per capita of $ 6,000. Connectivity to nearby mineral-rich zones and major port of Kolkata, Strategic location has been a major factor for the city's rapid industrialization. Jamshedpur is a nodal center in the Chhotanagpur industrial belt. City Mayors Foundation have listed Jamshedpur as one of the fastest growing global cities of the world with 86th rank. According to the survey by Delhi-based Indicus Analytics, about 8.9% of the city’s population has an average annual income of more than a million.

Known as "Steel City" or "Pittsburgh of India", Jamshepdur is a leading center for steel industry in India.[1] The city is home Asia's first steel plant operated by Tata Steel, which was established in 1912.[1] It is one of the largest integrated steel plants in India and produces around 10 million tonnes of steel every year, making it the first plant in the world to have 10 million tonne capacity in a single campus.[1] Additionally, four new facilities are planned to be built and increase production and employment opportunities.[2]

It is home to one of the largest industrial zones of India known as Adityapur which houses more than 1,200 small and medium scale industries.

In 1985, Vayudoot operated flights from Sonari Airport to Delhi, Ranchi and Kolkata. After the airline's closure MDLR Airlines, Kingfisher Airlines and Deccan Air started operations from Jamshedpur.
