ROLE OF DATA SCIENCE IN MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (MIS)

Data science is a multidisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data. Data science employs techniques and theories drawn from many fields within the context of mathematics, statistics, computer science, and information science. It uses the most powerful programming systems, and the most efficient algorithms to solve problems.

Turing award winner, Jim Gray imagined data science as a "fourth paradigm" of science, and asserted that everything about science is changing because of the impact of information technology.

In 2012, when Harvard Business Review called it "The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century", the term "data science" became a buzzword. It is now often used interchangeably with earlier concepts like business analytics, business intelligence, predictive modeling, and statistics.

The world has moved from the ancient usage of files and cabinet in information management into the concept of data science. In an organization such as an hospital, different patients are admitted with different illnesses, backgrounds and physical features. All their details are kept and processed by the information system. Even many patients confide and believe in this rather than a cabinet system. They reported that the procedures are less stressful, cost effective and also easily accessible.

Data science includes: 1. A Data Scientist, who must have a sound knowledge of data science, database management and data security. 2. Database, a store that houses all information, having tables which play the role of cabinets and compartments which play the role of rows and columns. 3. The network which connects the data scientist's computer to the database server can either be; Intranet, Ethernet or Internet. 4. The tools which are majorly but not entirely back-end computer languages. They include; Php, MySQL, Sql, R, Nosql, Python, Oracle, Asp.Net, Java, C, C++,C#, Firebird, Postgresql, SQlite and some javascript framework like Jquery, Jquery-UI, Ajax, Reactjs, Nodejs, Vue.js etc.

However, data science does have some lapses. The hackers tamper terribly with the data integrity, and it requires sufficient technical know-how to operate.

Since 2018, data science has provided jobs for many, and it will continue to be relevant in various fields, not only in medicine.

So, are you data literate? It is beyond just knowing the different parts of a computer. Do take a further step to learn, Trust me, you will need this knowledge sooner than you think.
