I hold a degree in natural sciences and a PhD in developmental biology from Cambridge University and joined Cancer Research UK's Science Communications team in 2004, after spending six years as a laboratory researcher. I produce the Cancer Research UK podcast and write for the charity's award-winning Science Update blog. I did my PhD in the lab of Azim Surani and postdoctoral research with Amanda Fisher.

Outside work, I'm a freelance writer and broadcaster, co-presenting the Naked Scientists radio show for more than a decade. I also present and produce the monthly Naked Genetics podcast, have presented several BBC Radio 4 science documentaries, and am a regular presenter on the weekly BBC Radio 5liveScience show. I'm also a musician, playing harp and other instruments in Sunday Driver and Talk in Colour (formerly the Shadow Orchestra).
