Cell is the stage name of French ambient artist Alex Scheffer. He has released two studio albums, and three live albums. Cell has also contributed many tracks for Ultimae Record's Fahrenheit Project series.

History

edit

Born in 1974, Alex Scheffer encountered his first music machine at the age of 10. He was given a Roland Juno-106 by his mother and father, both musicians themselves[1].

Alex started studying at the Conservatoire, where his favorite instrument remained the keyboard and the piano. As Alex's interest for electronic music grew, he began listening to artists such as Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, John Cage and Peter Gabriel[1].

In 2001 Alex Scheffer signed with the label Ultimae Records.

Cell's first album, Phonic Peace, was released in 2005 on the italian label Indica Music. Quite different from Cell's other albums, Phonic Peace's sound is more Ethno-Chillout[2].

Cell's second studio album is called Hanging Masses, this time released on the label Ultimae Records. Alex Scheffer himself calls this album more "personal", compared to Phonic Peace. He says that "Hanging Masses is so different...I didn’t use any samples, except for a few spoken word here and there"[2].
