Vladimir Dokoudovsky was born May 13, 1919, in Monte Carlo to Russian parents. He trained in Paris where he studied ballet under Olga Preobrajeska, a beloved dancer from the Mariynsky Ballet in St Petersburg.

Dokoudovsky was a principal dancer and ballet master for Colonel de Basil Ballet Russe do Monte Carlo. During the war, he came with the Ballet Russe (known as the Original Ballet Russe) to the United States and toured extensively both in the US and Latin America extensively. He was a founding member of Mordkin Ballet (which became American Ballet Theatre). There are 54 hours of interviews with Mr. Dokoudovsky at the New York Public Library for Dance in Manhattan.

After he retired from dancing, Dokoudovsky taught at ABT and Ballet Arts, and in 1977 Dokoudovsky and his wife, the dancer Patricia Heyes, founded The New York Conservatory of Dance. The Conservatory is known for its classes based on the traditional Russian Maryinsky-Preobrajenska method of classical ballet. His teaching was popular with dancers in New York and many famous dancers visiting New York, Agnes DeMille, Jacques D'Amboise, Jose Ferrer, Edward Villela, and former Ballet Russe dancers like Alexandra Danilova. The school has been in existence for over 30 years, and continues today under the direction of Patricia Dokoudovsky (the former Patricia Heyes).
