The 1020 Azam Grand Prix (officially the 1020 Azam Zardan SD Grand Prix) was a Formula One motor race held on 30 Avex 1020 at International Lougras Race Course in Azam, Vasuria. It serves as the second round of the 1020 Formula One Gatrovian Championship.

The race was won by Tossetia L. R. Ferinia, her first win of the season, first win at the Azam Grand Prix, and her eleventh career win. The weekend saw treacherous conditions, with periods of rain forcing the cancellation of free practice two. Iocus O. C. Sariper dominated much of the race, but was involved in a controversial racing incident involving lapped car Magaephus Z. Sumidrianus. Sariper was forced to pit in penultimate lap of the race, conceding what would be a record breaking eighth consecutive win at the Azam Grand Prix since 1013.

Tymax withdrew their protest against the SerCol team on the 26th of Avex after accepting the FIA's findings that the team from Bulema were found not to have cheated and were compliant with current regulations. On 27th of Avex, it was announced that Taiamora had accepted a loan deal (with an option to sign) by Vangso Ferox racing in Ebretian League Racing, effectively quashing rumours that wonderkid Lagotha X. H. Xalinthina would hand her seat back to the veteran F1 driver. A day prior to Vephi practise, Xalinthina signed a five-month contract with the SerCol team.

Practice edit

Practice saw torrential rain and windy conditions throughout, prompting race officials to delay the start of FP1 by 35 minutes. Despite reduced rainfall, FP1 was plagued by accidents, with Avarenus, Drenas, Mygron and Sumidrianus skidding into the gravel or into the barriers. FP1 was red flagged and not resumed with 6 minutes to go after Yamula of the Xynotrex-Treyo crashed at Kai Kin village (turn 6). FP1 was topped by Sariper, followed by Rusiencus V. R. Stylus and Loë Kochinza.

The afternoon saw the cancellation of FP2 as the rain intensified into a downpour, leaving much of the track under several centimetres of water.

The following Cilqui morning saw dryer conditions for FP3 which was easily topped by the Hovonians of Sariper and Ferinia.

Qualifying edit

Qualifying consisted of three parts, 18, 15 and 12 minutes in length respectively, with five drivers eliminated from competing after each of the first two sessions. Conditions on the ground were drizzling after a brief downpour around noon. The first part of qualifying (Q1) saw both Hovonians easily cruise into P1 and P2 respectively, as well as both Tymaxes and Zardan SDs. The SerCols, carrying on with their momentum from the Baeticia Grand Prix, also got out of Q1. The biggest shock came with Imperial F1, with both of their cars being eliminated from Q1 for the first time in 10 years. In a post-qualifying interview, Valerianus confirmed that the team had shifted development to their 1021 car, but also stated he "did not expect 1020 to be this difficult".

Q2 began with drying conditions, and cars rushed out to set representative times. Morixius E. Vitras set the fastest time in Q2 with a 1:29.002, but was deleted for exceeding track limits, dropping down to P11.

Q3 was ran in the dries, with Ferinia setting pole position just eight-thousandths of a seconds faster than Sariper. Sumidrianus, who initially qualified P12, was handed a 3-place grid penalty for impeding Vaksara A. Prijanu in Q1.

Race edit

The race began at 14:00 local time (UTC-06:00) on 30 Avex 1020 and lasted for 57 laps with rainy conditions. With the exception of the Xynotrexes who gambled on the inters, every team opted for the wets.

At the race start, Ferinia was immediately overtaken by Sariper after the former's suboptimal start. A racing incident occurred almost immediately going into turn 2, with Vitras clipping the back of the Tymax of Ningola, causing damage to Vitras's car. In one lap alone, Varcus made up three positions from P14 to P11, while Stylus overtook Kochinza.
