Kaila Smith (born June 6, 1989), better known by her stage-name Keyo or K_L4, is an American electronica artist based in Gainesville, Virginia. K_L4 has released one independent album.
Life and career
editEarly life
editAt a young age, Kaila would sing/dance in the mirror and or by herself. By age 13, she was given a guitar and tried forming a band with a few friends. At age 17, she began her solo career writing music in her bedroom using software such as FL Studio to create tracks.
(2009-2010) Empirical
editKeyo quickly gained attention self-releasing music online, leading to a few collaboration projects with Industrial artist Hexis Labs, who featured her song Secluded Progeny on his Everyday is Doomsday ep through Dark Mourning Productions. This lead up to the self produced 6 track Empirical ep, released in early 2010, with songs Dark Tea Party & Madd Hatter.
(2011-present) Dark Tea Party
editFrom Keyo's first EP, Empirical, she took some time off writing to take Art & Animation courses for school as well as focus on her full time job. The music was at a halt. A year after the release of Dark Tea Party, in 2011, Smith released the track Tektronic.
Smith plans to release another ep/full length during the second half of 2013. Collaborations may include more from Hexis Labs, Faces Like Echos and Bitch Brigade.
Musical style
editKaila has been described as genre-bending as she mixes vocals with electronic and pop production. She is known to have 'gamer'/electronic songs mixed with industrial and dark sounds.
Personal life
editSmith can be spotted by her pale skin and coloured synthetic dreads. She started receiving piercings at the age of 15 and began stretching shortly there after. Currently she holds size 0 plugs in her lobes, as well as, having 2 extra size 14 hoops on each lobe, cartilage, rook, nose, and chest dermals, which she's had twice.
Besides the electronic music, she's also an artist who holds artist alley tables at gaming/anime conventions. Her line-up for 2013 includes but not fully set:
