Life in Hakahana

edit

Introduction

edit

Hakahana is an Otjiherero word meaning 'hurry up' in English is situated in Katutura Windhoek just around Okuryangava Hakahana. It is a place where most of the black people are residing from, people who are unable to live luxuriously, not because they do not want to but simply because they cannot afford to. Different ethical groups of Namibians are staying there

  1. Damara's
  2. Herero's
  3. San's
  4. Wambo's
  5. Himba's, and so forth.

What the houses are built from

edit

Houses found in Hakahana are not all built from bricks, most if not all are built from:

  1. Corrugated Iron
  2. Used empty bottles with cement
  3. Wood

What crimes are committed there

edit

Many a times we hear of passion killings, theft, people committing suicide, baby dumping, rape and so forth, it a common thing being done almost in every town in Windhoek. Hakahana a few weeks ago, there was a baby that was found alive after having dumped by her mother in a plastic bag. This baby boy was found right on time and was rescued[1] A seven year old girl was raped on June,18 2008. The rapist was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment[2]

What are the advantages+disadvantages of living there?

edit

This are the most friendly people one can ever come across, this so because they all know one another, treat one another like family irrespective of what they are going through. However, it is unfortunate that Hakahana is not always safe, and this are the people who suffer most during the rainy and windy seasons. Not to forget the winter season whereby this people are the ones that survive the harsh cold weather as the are the ones that do not having proper roofs on their heads when going to bed. There is a lack of electricity, meaning only those that can afford to pay for electricity have it, those that are unable to afford it are forced to use candles to provide light in their shacks. Using candles not always safe as you never know what can happen after having it on the whole night. During winter it gets colder than cold, in summer hotter than hot. It is really for this people to live a normal life. Toilets are shared as well.

Conclusion

edit

It is about time this people get considered by the Namibian government, how will vision 2030 be achieved if development programs hardly benefit the poor people[3]. In Namibia, the poor are ever becoming poor, while the rich are getting richer everyday. I personally think that in order to get Namibia globally recognition, there should start improving these peoples' living conditions. The gap between the wealthy people and poor people is large and it should be changed. What I suggest that should be done is:

  1. Give some of this people jobs that will change their lives tremendously.
  2. Try to get their children educated as they are tomorrow's future leaders.
  3. Educate the elder's more on family planning, dangers of pregnancies and the use of contraceptives.
  4. Get them motivated to work hard in whatever they plan on doing.
  5. Help them to develop a positive mentalities.

Time for a change is now, a reduction in poverty will decrease government spending and there will be more money available to spend on public goods and services. Only than that the government will be able to achieve its economic objectives.
