Julienpdx, I am not sure what you can do about the citation needed note on "Life's Bitter Here". But I can at least help you.

When this campaign was rolled out senior CWA union leaders were invited to the teleconferences that were held in all of the major and many of the minor city locations. Sol Trujillo rolled out the campaign with new ads and marketing materials. It was all very up tempo and cheery. When it was finished the room in Seattle where I was attending began a question and answer session. Tensions had been building since the failed reengineering efforts. I asked the VP (do not remember his name, maybe you do -- black gentleman) who was in charge of all residential services how the employees were supposed to support "Life's Better Here" when most felt, "Life's Bitter Here" was more accurate. Needless to say he was not at all amused by my play on words.

I told this story on a union conference call with Sue Pisha and others from District 9 -- it simply rolled on from there.
