May Stone

edit

May Stone was a co-founder of Hindman Settlement School along with Katherine Petitt during an era in the nineteenth century known as the progressive era. Stone was a teacher and educator that saw the need for schooling in Appalachian Kentucky. It was with this vision that Stone and Petitt founded the first rural settlement school in United States. This idea was modeled after settlement houses that they had previously seen like Jane Addam's Hull House in Chicago, Illinois. The main philosophy was to give opportunity to the community to learn and expand their horizons. [1]
