Jim Schrempp of Saratoga, California is cofounder and served on the board of directors of Audible Magic, the world wide leader in B2B media identification services. He retired in 2016. Since then he was a founding member of the board of Maker Nexus a California non-profit that encourages and educates all kinds of makers in the San Francisco Bay Area. He also volunteers with Villages of San Mateo County, an organization with a mission to help seniors remain in their homes longer.
Personal Life
editHe grew up in Pacifica, California. Attending Oddstad Elementary, Crespi Middle School, and Terra Nova High School. He earned a BS in Computer Science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, graduating summa cum laude.
Professional Life
editHis professional career started at IBM San Jose as an intern writing disk drive diagnostics in 370 assembly code. Upon earning his BS in 1980 he joined Hewlett Packard as a factory support engineer in their Data Terminals Division, Sunnyvale, CA. Three years later he moved to the HP Computer Systems Division to manage a factory support team for the HP3000 MPE operating system. He worked 19 years for Hewlett Packard in a variety of positions, at one point managing a 50 person section of the Operating System R&D team that included Allbase, a proprietary SQL database, and low level device drivers.
In 1999 he left HP to co-found Audible Magic as vice president of software development with his good friend from HP, Vance Ikezoye.
He retired from Audible Magic in 2016, and retired from its board of directors in 2022. Since 2016 he has consulted for early stage start ups and immersed himself in volunteer work.
Maker Nexus
editIn 2017 a local for-profit makerspace, TechShop, went out of business. Recognizing the hole this left in the community, Schrempp and five other people immediately formed a committee to explore a replacement. Eventually forming Maker Nexus as a 501(c)(3) corporation, Schrempp was vice-president of the founding Board of Directors. In 2019 Maker Nexus opened a 7,000 square foot makerspace in Sunnyvale, California with 50 members. In 2020 it relocated to a 29,000 square foot building with 200 members. As of 2023 it has over 400 members.
