Greenwell Matango
editGreenwell Matongo is a suburb in the city of Windhoek, which is the capital city of Namibia.An informal settlement found on the outskirts of Windhoek just before The Goreangab Dam. Greenwell Matongo is named after a freedom fighter, Greenwell Simasiku Matongo, who was born on the 1st of January 1945 and died in the year 1978. [1] This residential area is home to many residents with a lot of commercial activity going on as well as one specific educational facility and other minor service facilities.
Greenwell Matongo is well known for the infamous Eveline Street which is a street filled with bars and Shebeens from beginning to end . Along this street one can also find a number of car wash spots, a few mini grocery shops, barbershops, fruit and vegetable stands, mobile repair shops, small kitchens that serve fast foods, and several braai stands Regional variations of barbecue better known as kapana stands, amongst other small entrepreneurial activities.
Developments
editDespite its synonymous association with informal entertainment areas, Greenwell Matongo is also a host to a community library,[2] the Greenwell Matongo Community Library[3] for the benefit of its residents.
Just in front of the community library, there is a community center where different activities take place, activities include church activities and there is also a daycare center within the premises. Next to the library one can find a mobile police station where people can report criminal activities and where people can certify their copies. Greenwel Matongo is also underway to development seeing that all the houses made of zinc that are present in the location have been provided with water and electricity and in some parts toilets have been built to improve sanitation.
The downside
editThe Greenwell settlement is full of commercial activities and a lot of young entrepreneurs trying to make a living, but extracting bars has become one of the easiest and fastest way to make money and this has a disadvantage because people spent most of their spare time at bars drinking and this leads to a high number of unpleasant outbreaks such as fights which may lead to murder cases, theft and arguing. Amongst these there is also a high level of noise caused by jukeboxes because the bars in most cases are at at compacted area. These initiations are due to a high rate of unemployment in the area.
