JOSE LUIS GOUMAL Businessman JOSE GOUMAL, FCA 1973-2009, FCCA FCMI. Born on January 5, 1946. Born in La Linea, Spain. Arrived in UK in 1955. Married Jean Owen, known as Samantha Jones, a Liverpool singer [1] EXPERTISE Extensive experience as a chartered accountant in business management; management advice to businesses; financial planning; taxation advice (Europe); and financial public relations. Developed extensive portfolio of clients mostly in media & entertainment but also PR, property developers, retailers, solicitors and ex-patriates. Shunning purely academic work, much preferred and happier in practical, hands-on business management, working closely with clients and their other advisors providing well-rounded support of their businesses.

From 1981 to 1997 Jose was senior partner in Anderson Goumal, Chartered Accountants, providing business advice, accounting, forensic accounting, taxation and financial advice to individuals and companies, specialising in small and medium-sized businesses. In 1997 Jose merged Anderson Goumal with Brebner Allen Trapp (now Brebners), chartered accountants, and became an equity partner in the merged firm. He spent ten years cementing his portfolio of clients at Brebners before retiring from the practice to pursue other interests. Throughout his career Jose was a director of numerous companies with some several successful businesses. Because of his experience as a professional adviser and in running his businesses he showed a keen appreciation of the businessman’s ongoing pre-occupations and needs. Alongside the professional practice, Jose was heavily involved in turning round the fortunes of Albrizzi, a company originally founded by society and celebrity architect and designer Tony Cloughley ( he designed the royal apartments for Prince Charles and Princess Anne at Windsor Castle and Lord Louis Mountbatten's home in London among others , and he was one of the first to be full page photographed and featured in Cosmopolitan magazine) and Baron Alessandro Albrizzi [other notable shareholders included (now Dame) Vivien Duffield , the daughter of Sir Charles Clore, one of Britain’s most successful post-war businessmen and generous philanthropist. Dame Vivien assumed the Chairmanship of the Clore Foundation after Sir Charles’ death in 1979). The Albrizzi shop and design company fell into difficulty when Baron Alexander and Tony Cloughley split the business, the former taking over the New York branch and the latter the Sloane Square site. On Tony's death his shareholding was acquired by Jose who took insisted on taking no remuneration for many years until the business' fortunes were rebuilt. Jose relinquished his holding in 2006, leaving the once-again thriving business to the remaining design shareholders. Quite separately, Jose has been involved as a producer and 'angel' in West End and touring theatre, including Keith Waterhouse' "Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell" at the Old Vic with Peter O'Toole and Neil Simon's "Laughter on the 23rd Floor" with Gene Wilder in Shaftesbury Avenue, Snoo Wilson's 'HRH' starring Amanda Donohoe and Corin Redgrave at the Playhouse Theatre. As part of Pericles Productions (under Paddy Wilson) numerous productions were undertaken with some of best actors and directors in the UK, including Ned Sherin ,Simon Callow, Maria Aitken, Frank Findlay, Sandra Dickinson and many others. This period included a spell of ownership of the Arts Theatre, the private commercial theatre in Great Newport Street, Leicester Square. From his professional days Jose built up many close friendships from within his clients. Tom Bell (an enigmatic superb actor) was a particular close friend. When both Jose and Tom were divorced they would take their children ( Jose's two boys and Tom's two girls)on holiday {staying with Jose's Spanish family in Cataluña, a road trip in a Winnebago through Colorado and Wyoming, the hills of Wales , the ring of Kerry in Ireland and so on). This resulted in many adventures (good and bad). Tom would use his acting charm to good effect. On a long flight he'd call over the stewardess and lament that we were two poor inexperienced men with four young children. What would we do to keep the kids amused and under control for such a long flight? One sad pleading look from that wonderful acting face of his and in no time the stewardess would say "which are your children , sir?". "Oh them, over there". “don’t worry sir, we'll keep them amused" And she produced colouring pencils and comics and sweets. "Can I do anything else for you, sir?” Tom: " Oh, that's very kind, luv, could I have a double vodka and tonic? And one for my mate?” Oscar Nemon, the renowned sculptor of royalty and statesmen was another fauvorite. Oscar's studio was in the grounds of St James' Palace. Unable to pay his fees, Oscar once enquired if he could pay in kind. Well, who wouldn't accept that? Jose had often complemented Oscar on his series of 'Madonna and child' - small (only inches high), beautiful bronzes. So he rather expected something of that ilk. Many months later , having more or less forgiven the debt ( as he'd been a friend and long-time, loyal client) Jose's secretary buzzed him on the intercom to say Mr Nemon was outside, could he send someone to help him. Mystified, Jose sent one of his staff to help out as needed. In comes into Jose's office Oscar followed by the member of staff with a box over six feet square. Oscar proceeded to explain that he hadn't forgotten, that he'd been very busy. He then opened the box to reveal a magnificent bronze bust of Sir Winston Churchill.
