Early Life & Education

Cynthia Gerlein-Safdi (born January 12th, 1988 in Colmar, France) is an Eco-hydrologist and junior fellow of the Michigan Society of Fellows, at the Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering at the University of Michigan. She attended the bilingual (French - German) high school program, Abibac at the Lycée Bartholdi in Colmar, France, receiving both a French baccalaureate as well as the German equivalent, the Abitur. In 2009, she completed her Bachelor of Science in Earth and Planetary Sciences from the University of Strasbourg, France. Remaining at the University of Strasbourg, she finished a Master of Science in 2011, before completing a Master of Engineering in 2012 from the Ecole et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre (EOST), France. During her time at Strasbourg, she received the Mobility outside Europe Program award. In 2017, she completed her PhD from the Department of Civil and Environment Engineering at Princeton University.

Career & Research

In early 2017, she co-authored a literature review of the global cycling of dust aerosols and their effect on climate and environment.[1] Later that year, she co-authored a paper assessing and highlighting the ongoing loss of tropical ecosystems and the growing need to understand environmental changes in response to climate. [2]
