editThe main characters of Breath of Fire II are Ryu and his companions, a group of adventurers who are investigating a series of strange events which seem to be connected to the Church of St. Eva. Ryu's story is presented in two parts, which involve both as a child and as an adult, and his sudden emergence in a world where all memories of himself and his family have seemingly been erased. As a half-blood member of the Dragon Clan, he is a human with the ability to transform into powerful dragons, a power which hasn't yet been awakened at the beginning of the game. He is accompanied on his journey by several other characters, including Rand Marks, a towering member of the Shell Clan and bouncer at the local coliseum; Katt, a hot-tempered Woren who devoted herself to Ryu after being saved from an assassination plot; Nina, a Princess of Windia who was exiled due to her black wings; Sten Legacy, a highlander who irks out a living as a traveling magician; Jean, a Prince of the Creeping Clan whose lackadaisical nature has led to him being deposed;
