Mighty Car Mods is an Australian based YouTube show that focuses around DIY car modifications for car owners of all ages. The web-based miniseries was created and is hosted by Blair Joscelyne and Martin Mulholland, known as MOOG and Marty on the show. It debuted on January 9, 2008 and has since become a YouTube partner.[1] Each episode centralizes around the common idea of buying a car, modifying said car and then repeating it for each episode, with the added flair of Aussie humor.[2]

History edit

The Mighty Car Mods duo, Blair Joscelyne (known as MOOG) and Martin Mulholland (Marty) met each other while working together at a recording studio in 2005, where they both displayed a mutual love for cars due to a mishap during a commute together. The series first debuted in January 2008, when co-host MOOG was asked by current co-host, Marty, if he wanted his 2001 Daihatsu Cuore to be 'fixed up.' This marked the birth of their series. The idea for Mighty Car Mods was initially intended to be focused around eco-friendly car based modifications but that was soon dropped after the first few episodes.[3]

Format edit

Each episode varies in length, from 5–30 minutes long. Typical run time is around 15 minutes. It is hosted by MOOG and Marty, with occasional special guests like the Mechanical Stig, Rake, and Faceplant. The series is filmed with a series of cameras which include the Canon EOS 7D, 60D, 5D, JVC HM100 as well as a variation of different GoPro's. Each episode commences with a semi animated introduction scene done by Gavin Tyrell, which then leads to the hosts talking about what each episode will entail. In previous seasons, the introduction was a showcase of many of their previous episode's highlights. Colloquialisms such as the term "mad" have been coined by host MOOG which are often attributed to the show in Australian pop-culture. Throughout the seasons, the general format for episodes has been: Buy a car, modify a car, repeat. However, special episodes such as How to Zombie-Proof your car and Turbos and Temples (their full feature film) have drawn internet accolades from around the world. As of season 4, each episode finishes with an extra excerpt from bloopers, which entices fans post-credits.

Additionally to appearing to on the show, Rake is the focus of attention in a Mighty Car Mods based meme where numerous fans took a phrase from the episode Honda Civic Build Part 2 and turned it into a meme by repeating it anywhere where Mighty Car Mods appeared. The phrase became so popular that Mighty Car Mods decided to profit from it by making a sticker out of it.

Reception edit

Mighty Car Mods has received numerous attention from various sources, most notably for their How to Zombie Proof your Car. Numerous sources cite it as being incredibly funny, informative and even life saving, in the event of an apocalypse, that is.[6] Their full feature film titled Turbo's and Temples even made it into theatres for a short time in Sydney Australia

Mighty Car Mods also caught the attention of Australia Auto Salon, a popular modified car showcase that appears around the country,[7] in mirror of the Tokyo Auto Salon. They toured and showcased each event, including showing off their own show car deemed the Mighty Cuore at the Sydney Auto Salon. The build was a year long build process and was shown in a three part episode series, which are some of their most viewed episodes ever.
