Reduction Gears

edit

The use if reduction gears is to take power from one or multiple prime movers at one speed and power, and transfer it to another mechanism at a different speed.[1]

What I need

To transmit the rotational force of the shaft into thrust, propellers are most commonly used in todays merchant vessels. The developed thrust from the propeller is transferred to the hull via a thrust bearing.

By having an engine drive these reduction gears, they can also be designed to include alternators to offset the electrical load on combustion generators. Additionally, if the main propulsion engine were to be down, one of the alternators can be motorized and be used to propel the ship at low speeds.
