Background edit

Career edit

Lloyd's edit

On joining Lloyd's of London, Duncan worked for Sedgwick Forbes (Lloyd's Underwriting Agents), part of the Sedgwick Group. In 1984 he joined the Marine Syndicate 483. Whilst there Duncan created Compass Information Systems Limited, developing and selling the first insurance shipping exposure system.[1]

He spent a total of 15 years at Lloyd's before registering Warranty Direct at Companies House on 02/08/1996 with his father, David.[2]

Warranty Direct edit

Although extended warranties were the norm in North America[3] at the time of Warranty Direct’s launch, extended warranties were a relatively new concept in the UK. With the typical manufacturer warranty lasting only 3 years [4] however, there was a potential market for extended mechanical and electrical repair insurance.

When Warranty Direct began, its sole service was vehicle warranties, but it later began providing home appliance warranties, GAP insurance and cover for vehicles deemed high-end in their Prestige and Performance policies.

In 2006 Duncan and David sold a portion of their Warranty Direct shares to Cardif Pinnacle, a subsidiary of BNP Paribas[5], but remain at the company as Managing Director and Deputy Chairman respectively.
