United States east coast major hurricanes at landfall

Definition edit

This timeline shows major hurricanes (955 mbar and stronger) that have hit the east coast of the mainland United States (from the southern tip of Florida - not including the Florida Keys - through Maine) since 1890. "Landfall" is defined as the storm's eye crossing land. Only storms that were major hurricanes at time of landfall are listed. The official source is the NHC, currently taken from [1].

Notes edit

  • Only the mainland US is counted. The Florida Keys do not count. This is partly to make the list more objective (landfall along islands is hard to determine). Also, Florida Keys landfalls can occur from either direction so they may include Caribbean hurricanes as well as Atlantic hurricanes. The best-track data [2] is used in some places to separate Keys or SW Florida hurricanes from SE Florida hurricanes.
  • Each hurricane gives its category, landfall pressure, and overall US landfall ranking. All entries are from [3] (through 2004). Entries for older hurricanes are estimates and could be revised in the future (this includes all hurricanes before the mid-90s!).
  • Only 1954 and 1893 have two hurricanes. This is noteworthy mostly because they are completely illegible on the diagram.
  • Data before 1890 is probably incomplete.
  • Pressure is the sole method of measuring strength. 955 mbar is the cutoff for the table used as the primary source. [4] runs a bit further (to 965 mbar, the cutoff for category 3 hurricanes) but does not include the full timeline.

Addendum edit

These Hurricanes crossed the Florida Keys. They may or may not have made landfall there. Regardless, Keys hurricanes are not included in the timeline. This list may not be complete.
