Smokio is a consumer electronics company headquartered in Paris, France, which designs, develops, and sells electronic cigarettes and mobile applications. Its main products are the Smokio connected electronic cigarette and associated app. Smokio was founded in August 2013 by Steve Anavi (ex-Director of International Operations - Groupon Goods), Alexandre Prot (co-founder of Wimdu), and Emrah Yuceer to develop and sell connected electronic cigarettes. On its release in February 2014, Smokio was the world's first electronic cigarette to utilise Bluetooth Low Energy to allow the user to collect usage statistics via a smartphone app[2]. The company was funded by the founders, Frederic Potter (Founder of Withings and CEO of Netatmo) and Alven Capital.

History

edit

Smokio was founded in August 2013 and began sales of its first product, the Smokio connected electronic cigarette, in February 2014. The device connects via Bluetooth Low Energy to a dedicated smartphone app, also developed by Smokio, which collects data about the user's consumption and relays the information back to the user in a number of different fashions, enabling the user to more accurately monitor their consumption and usage history. The founders hope that this will enable people to use the device and app as a coach to help them reduce their dependency on tobacco[3], helping to fight the largest cause of preventable death in the world[4].

The kit was originally sold in Black and Silver versions, and came with 2 CE5 clearomizers, a USB charger and a 5ml bottle of nicotine-free eLiquid. Smokio released the second iteration of its connected electronic cigarette in May, featuring upgrades to factor inputs and finish, a higher-quality Evod 2 clearomizer, and improved packaging. At the same time, Smokio released a 'Mini' version, featuring a smaller battery than its original kit.

Smokio App

edit

The Smokio App is available on both Android and iOS handsets which are Bluetooth Low Energy enabled. It has undergone numerous upgrades since its release, including further features and better connectivity. Main features include:

  • An automated puff counter, including a calculated number of cigarette equivalents that the user has taken;
  • A chart showing the user's long-term consumption;
  • A counter displaying an estimate of how much money the user has saved through using an electronic cigarette, based on data input by the user
  • A page showing how much the user's health is estimated to have improved since quitting smoking, based on data from the American Cancer Society
