One+One Filmmakers Journal

edit

One+One Filmmakers Journal is a printed and web-based film magazine published in Brighton, England. It was founded by filmmaker Daniel Fawcett in May 2009 as One+One The Brighton Filmmakers Journal, but dropped its Brighton title affiliation in April 2010.

The journal compromises essays, interviews and manifestos, and runs as a totally Not for profit project, printing a small run of A5 sized magazines distributed to cinemas, cafes and arts venues across the UK and a free to access website.

The journal is influenced and informed by progressive politics, queer theory, the Avant garde and champions truely independent cinema. It accepts articles from open submission and has expanded to include writers based internationally. Its website claims its intent is to "provoke discussion and critical reassessments in order to influence a fresh, innovative and challenging cinema of the future...It is not a magazine compiled of five star reviews, neither is it a journal of socially detached cold academic prose. One+One seeks to bring the filmmaker and the theorist together, moving forward the task of Cinema and aiding the becoming of the medium."

History

edit

Daniel Fawcett, an independent filmmaker living in Colchester, Essex moved to Brighton in 2009, and set up The Brighton Filmmakers Coalition which continues to run as a networking group in Brighton. Running parallel to this he founded the One+One Filmmakers Journal with members of the group. They launched their first issue in May 2009, with a launch event at The Redroaster Cafe, screening films from The Brighton Filmmakers Coalition's first ever filmmaker challenge.

Since this time the journal has become a seperate and independent journal having cut its ties to the Filmmakers Coalition. It launched it's 4th issue with a debate on independent cinema at the Cambridge Film Festival in September 2010, and its 5th issue at the Brighton Film Festival in November 2010.

The journal is currenly edited by Daniel Fawcett, and two of the original team members Bradley Tuck and James Marcus Tucker.
