The Arab-American Family Support Center is a nonprofit organization located in Brooklyn, New York. It was founded in 1994 with the stated purpose of empowering "...new immigrants with the tools they need to successfully acclimate to life in the United States and become active participants in the community around them."[1] Although the organization's main focus is on the Arab community, all of the its services are free and open to those of all backgrounds.

The Arab American Family Support Center was founded in 1994.

The main AAFSC officed is locate at 150 Court Street, Brooklyn, New York, 11201.[2] AAFSC operates a satellite office in Bayridge, Brooklyn, located at 449 Bay Ridge Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11220.[3]

Organizational Structure edit

Since 2006, Ms. Lena Alhusseini has been the Executive Director of AAFSC. Prior to her work at AAFSC, she worked for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).[5] Samer Khalef is the chair of the organization's 11 member board of directors.[6] The organization employs 27 full-time paid staff members, including case-planners, ESL instructors, and legal services staff. Along with paid staff, AAFSC utilizes volunteers for many of its programs. The New York Writer's Coalition runs youth writers workshops for teens and children of recent immigrants[7] and New York Cares provides volunteers to both the youth and adult education programs.[8] As part of the Arab American Resource Corps, a national Americorps program that supports Arab American organzations,[9] AAFSC also receives Americorps Members each year.

Affiliations edit

AAFSC is a member of the National Network for Arab American Communities (NNAAC).[10] NNAAC's goal is to "foster economic, cultural, social and political empowerment of Arab Americans," by developing Arab American community based-organizations.[11] According to the NNAAC website, "Since 1994, the Arab American Family Support Center (AAFSC) in Brooklyn, NY has been serving newly arrived and low-income Arab Americans in New York. AAFSC provides a variety of services to the community, including child welfare preventative services, ESL and citizenship classes, youth programs, Arabic language and cultural programs, legal services, domestic violence prevention and health programs."[12]
