"The book did not include the author's name, instead offering an

engraving by Samuel Hollyer depicting the poet in work clothes and a jaunty hat, arms at his side" Could change "poet" to "Whitman" for clarity.

""That would tend to induce people to take me along with them and read me in the open air: I am nearly always successful with the reader in the open air."" A naked quote; is not attributed to Whitman.

"The title Leaves of Grass was a pun. "Grass" was a term given by publishers to works of minor value and "leaves" is another name for the pages on which they were printed" Move this to the 2nd paragraph.

"Whitman's collection of poems in Leaves of Grass is usually interpreted according to the individual poems contained within its individual editions. The editions were of varying length, each one larger and augmented from the previous version, until the final edition reached over 400 poems. Discussion is often focused also upon the major editions of Leaves of Grass often associated with the very early respective versions of 1855 and 1856, to the 1860 edition, and finally to editions very late in Whitman's life which also included the significant Whitman poem When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd. The 1855 edition is particularly notable for the inclusion of the two poems Song of Myself and The Sleepers. The 1856 edition included the notable Whitman poem Crossing Brooklyn Ferry. In the 1860 edition, Whitman further added the major poems A Word Out of the Sea and As I Ebb'd With the Ocean of Life. The specific interpretation of many of Whitman's major poems may be found in the articles associated with those individual poems." No references. The Analysis section in general could be expanded.

Miscellaneous: the introductory passage makes little mention of the legacy or controversy of this poem.A short paragraph would fix this.

Whitman sent a copy of the first edition of Leaves of Grass to Emerson, the man who had inspired its creation. In a letter to Whitman, Emerson said "I find it the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom America has yet contributed."[13] He went on, "I am very happy in reading it, as great power makes us happy." Could mention that Emerson mentioned the book to his friends.

“American poetry like the nation should be

different from any kind written previously. It should look different, sound different and

deal

with different subject matter if it was to guide the development of a radical new American

democracy. So he designed his book unlike any previous book of poetry.”

This quote should be in the page.

Miscellaneous: The article should make mention of what critics have called the three thematic drifts in Leaves of Grass over the course of time.

Summary

JakeLong1995, I'm glad to finally see some progress on your project now. I have some serious concerns about how it's proceeding, however. First, all of these assignments should be posted to your Talk Page, not the User Page. Second, I'm not getting any sense on these smaller assignments that you understand how to use Wikipedia editing features. You've inserted no hyperlinks (as required), and have not signed any of your posts (as required), so I had to search the page history to find out when you had submitted your work. My bigger concern, however, is how you have completed this assignment. Instead of giving me a summary of the work you will conduct, you've listed the exact changes you've already made. I see that you have changed this "Summary" section 3 or 4 times since you originally posted it on on the 4th (2 days late), so I don't have a good sense of what you are working on; every change to the summary section is significant, and gives a different set of edits that you have made (and not a summary of the kind of change you will make). It seems that you are going in and making many small changes to the article on the poem, but I can't tell if the work you are doing is enough to fulfill the requirements for this assignment, since directions for the assignment haven't been followed. Finally, you haven't completed the other half of the summary assignment, which was to post your proposed edits to the talk page for the article you are working on. So, while I appreciate that you are moving forward with this project, significant improvements will need to be made in how your record and report the work that you are doing if you want to receive credit for this project. Bora, Indu (2015). "A Study of Whitman's Thematic Drift in 'Leaves of Grass'". International Journal of Multidisciplinary Approach & Studies Vol.2 Issue 4: 33-37

This is an article mostly dealing with how Whitman's focus during the different stages of his life was reflected in his various revisions of Leaves of Grass. It also mentions the influence of Indian philosophy and religion on the poet.

I'm planning to use this source to expand the Analysis section of the article to include the Three Thematic Drifts mentioned in the source.

Brookens Library Search Engine (Academic Search Complete)

Yes, it was published in an academic journal.

Folsom, Ed; Loving,Jerome."The Walt Whitman Controversy: A Lost Document". Virginia Quarterly Review Vol.83 Issue 2: 122-127

This article is mostly about the relationship between Mark Twain and Walt Whitman, but also talks about the controversy stemming from the banning of Leaves of Grass in Boston.

I'm going to use the source to emphasize the sensational nature of the controversy and how it raised Whitman's profile.

Nice work, JakeLong1995. All of this research is relevant and will work for you. My only concern here is in formatting -- rather than typing a paragraph for each annotation, you've included separate lines for each component of the annotation. Nadinecross78 (talk) 23:28, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
