The Wild Honey Suckle is a 1786 poem by American author Philip Freneau. Its style and tone is often considered a reaction to the neoclassicism of poets like Alexander Pope and an early anticipation of Romantic poetry. The poem was first printed on July 6, 1786 in the Columbian Herald.

Themes and critical response The poem describes a secluded honeysuckle and makes observations about mortality. Paul Elmer More praised the "unearthly loveliness" of Freneau's "The Wild Honey Suckle" but noted that "even a clever journeyman's hand could alter a word here and there for the better."

The Wild Honey Suckle is a 1786 poem by American author Philip Freneau. Its style and tone is often considered a reaction to the neoclassicism of poets like Alexander Pope and an early anticipation of Romantic poetry. This poem is now the most frequently reprinted and quoted of Freneau’s poems, it was seldom reprinted in the poet’s lifetime. The poem was first printed on July 6, 1786 in the Columbian Herald. The consensus both in the United States and abroad is that this is the poet’s best lyric and is perhaps his most accomplished verse composition.

Freneau used two main themes in this poem and explained them by using a simple flower. It was unheralded for a poet at the time to talk about life or death, but in this poem those two themes are the main themes for the poem. He explains death as something that cannot be overcome. He uses the flower to express death and uses the flowers in Eden to explain that death will reach everything. Though he does use death throughout the poem he also uses the theme of life. Life is explained with the flower because even though it is a short life, it is still life. He explains the flowers life and the surrounding factors that allows the flower to thrive.
