User:Izno/Navbox constellations

Don't stuff links into one navbox. Instead, create constellations which allow the user to have an overview of a topic area and then to dive into the specific area with some "sub"-navboxes.

Example edit

Today, an example that exists is {{Blizzard Entertainment}} and its child navboxes like {{Warcraft universe}}. The former provides the high level aspects of the company called Blizzard Entertainment, while the separate Warcraft universe template provides the detailed links. Crucially, both templates contain links which overlap on the topics (namely, the games and some of the game creators). This allows the user using navboxes as navigation to move between the high-level topics and lower-level topics seamlessly. In contrast, if we were to put all the child's navboxes in the parent "Blizzard Entertainment", we would decrease the likelihood of successful topic navigation.

Consequences edit

  • You don't have the page weight of several hundred links.
  • Readers have an easier time of navigating the content
    • They're given easy direction
    • Avoid getting lost in a large navbox
