Acute Accent

edit

{{Letters with acute accent}} There are the most diacritics on a with an acute accent than any other diacritic. Áá is used in Chinese pinyin, Dutch (for emphasis), Irish (for lengthening), Czech (as aː), Hungarian (as aː), Slovak (as aː), Faroese (as ɔ or ɔaː), Icelandic (as au̯ (ow)), Portuguese, Vietnamese (called sắc), and Welsh (to show that the stress falls on a syllable that is not the penultimate). It was used in the Kazakh alphabet until 2019, when it was replaced by Ää.

Double Acute Accent

edit

A̋a̋ is used almost exclusively in Hungarian, and is often confused with a diaeresis or umlaut, therefore sometimes called by typographers a hungarumlaut.
