Indu Abeyratne - A Disaster Risk Reduction Professional

Indu Abeyratne is a Sri Lankan professional who's working in the development field for last thirteen years in Sri Lanka and the South Asian region. He was born in Matale, a Central part of the country and studied in Kandy, one of the most beautiful and sacred city in the globe in the central hills of Sri Lanka.

Indu is an extraordinary character in many fields; in education, in sports, in humanity and also in development planning especially in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction. Indu has studied from Christ Church College in Matale became the 1st in the grade 5 scholarship in 1987 was enabling Indu to be entered into Dharmaraja College (RAJANS) one of the most renowned school in the country which was started by Col Henry Steel Olcott in 1887. Idu was a very bright chap in the school, both in education and sports and also a proud Old Hosteler in the RAJANS from 1988 to 1995. Indu was a very good football and hockey player in his Alma Mater brought many achievements during 1988 to 1996. He was a three times school colors winner for Hockey and represented Kandy District Hockey Team in 1994 and 1995.

After the secondary education from the school, Indu entered to the most beautiful University of the Globe (Probably), University of Peradeniya for his undergraduation and then he has entered to Post graduation in University of Colombo in Information Technology. He is a Microsoft Certified Professional and is a Cisco Certified Network Associate back in 2002. Indu has completed many professional courses in IT field until he left the field in 2006 embarking his career in the field of Development.

Indu has started his career with Ceylinco Group as a IT Administrator in 2001, and then joined with World Health Organization in Sri Lanka as a IT Specialist in December 2003. Completing around 4 years of Hospital based work he has joined with World Largest Humanitarian organization, Red Cross Movement. Indu joined as a Assistant Programme Officer for the Disaster Management unit of the Sri Lanka Red cross Society, embarking a blissful career in the field of DRR in 2007. From there onwards he was a charisma at the Disaster management arena of Sri Lanka and has represented the country in many international forums. Indu is one of the most seniro chap to be in the inauguration of the National Disaster Management Coordination Committee, which was established to monitor the DM activities in the country under Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA), endorsed at the second world conference for disaster risk reduction in Hyogo, Japan in 2005.

Indu has contributed many development initiatives in the field of DRR. Indu was a key member of SAARC DM working group to finalize the South Asia road map on Community Based Disaster Risk Management in 2007 in Dhaka, and also a key contributor to produce Community Based Early Warning Global Guidelines for IFRC in 2011. Further Indu was a key contributor to develop the National Disaster management Plan and National Emergency Operation Plan for Sri Lanka together with Disaster Management Center.

Indu has undergone many training in the field of DRM during last ten years, nationally and internationally.
