Quartet Books (founded in London in 1972) is one of the UK's fore-most^{[citation needed]} independent publishing houses. The company's and output reflected the socialist ideals and co-operative spirit of its four founders – Ken Banerji, John Boothe, William Miller and Brian Thompson – all former executives of Granada Publishing Ltd..

Quartet's objective was to provide a broad variety of titles, including fiction and non-fiction in both casebound and paperback, and also paperback editions of books published by hardcover houses.

Quartet sought to bring to print books that fell outside the mainstream of British publishing, publishing books on left-wing politics, biography, sexuality, Jazz and other minority interests, many in translation from foreign languages.

It also nurtured the nascent feminist publisher, Virago Press, whose first 10 titles were published in association with Quartet^[1].
