He studied voice, music and recitation in Madrid.
Following his first artistic performances on Radio Madrid, Miguel de Alonso was awarded numerous honors by announcers José Luis Péker and Joaquín Prat. He proved a hit on various other Spanish radio stations as well.
His professional career has been marked by innumerable successes. In his position as first tenor at the National Lyric Company, the Spanish Lyric Company and the José Tamayo Lyric Company, he has performed opera, zarzuela and concerts on the world’s premier stages, particularly in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central America, Europe and various countries in the Middle East.
The international press has been full of praise for Miguel de Alonso’s voice and lyric performances, including the pages of publications such as the French newspaper Le Parisien and the English magazine Music. In Germany, it was commented during several of his performances, “Seine Stime ist wunderbar” (His voice is magnificent.).
For the past 25 years, he has directed his own zarzuela company, known as the Miguel de Alonso Lyric Company of Madrid.
He boasts world records for the performance of certain zarzuelas, and specifically, for the notoriously difficult Marina, with the number of presentations of this work reaching 466. His opera, zarzuela and concert performances number some 8,000.
His gifts as a tenor have been spotlighted by the journal of the American chapter of The Jussi Björling Society, which considers Alonso among the 20 greatest tenors of all time, declaring that he possesses a secure high register, achieved only by Alfredo Kraus when he was young.
He has performed the following Italian operas on numerous occasions: Rigoletto, Madame Butterfly, Turandot, Tosca and Cavalleria Rusticana.
For his artistic work and the promotion of opera and zarzuela, he was declared the Burgalés (native or resident of Burgos) of the Year and awarded the Silver Medal by the city of Aranda de Duero.
In recognition of his artistic contributions, he has been named a permanent member of the Academy of Hispanic Culture. Córdoba has bestowed him the title of corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Fine Arts. Lastly, the mayor of Granada has named him Ambassador of Granada to the world.
His discography in opera, zarzuela and vocal performance covers a wide repertoire.
He is the favorite son of his hometown, Hontoria del Pinar, where the street Tenor Miguel de Alonso has been dedicated in his honor.
