Geographical division and food

The cuisine of the Nepal vary according to geographical region as, climate and soil type is distinct in each region and hence, food grown grown on these region differs from one another. Even though Nepal is small in size, it is rich in geographical diversity. The altitude in Nepal ranges from 60 m to 8848 m (highest point on earth , Mount Everest). The area of Nepal is dived into three region according to the altitude range : Mountain, Hilly and Terai (plain Lands). 


Mountain region and food

The Himalayan region is not fertile as compared to other regions. Moreover, the climate is cold throughout the year with heavy snowfalls. [1]  The food crops grown on this region are: Buckwheat, Millet,  Naked Barley, common beans, high altitude rice. [2] Also, because of cold temperature, people often prefer hot and warm foods like: soup, thukkpa (ramen), strong tea, strong alcohols. The cattle raised in this region are Yak, chauries(yak and cow crossed) , Himalayan goats and sheeps. People raise these animals for meat, milk, cheese , and yogurt. [3]

Terai region and food

The area of Nepal is divided into three region: Himalayan, Hilly and Terai(plains) and hot temperature. The ranking of this region according to it's soil fertility is: Terai , Hilly and Himalayan.
