Early life
editBurgersfort is the small town in between Limpopo and Mpumalanga boarders,situated next to the Spekboom River [1] at the edge of the Bushveld Complex in the Fetakgomo Greater Tubatse Local Municipality. The town was established around 1876 and 1877, there was a war between Bapedi of Chief Sekhukhune, and was named after President TF Burgers. The region is rich with mineral platinum, metals and Chrome. Burgersfort neighboring towns are Lydenburg (60 km), Origstard (26 km), and Steelpoort (16 km). [2] The region is rich in platinum and platinum group metals.[3] The town's neighbouring towns are Mashishing (60 km), Steelpoort (16 km) and Ohrigstad (26 km).[4]
Career
editBurgersfort is known for its minerals and mining sector, whereby it contributes to the south African economy and youth employment. Currently Burgersfort is growing rapidly and has two shopping malls, complex and Thaba Moshate casino within the town. There is a college called Sekhukhune TVET College located at Praktiseer, whereby they take their engineering students to the nearby mines around Burgersfort for their practical and it really help students to be exposed to the real world.
Career: Early 2010’s
editAfter the year 2010 they built two malls (Tubatse crossing and Burgersfort mall), Thaba Moshate and the dam called De hoop, the dam is the 13th largest dam in South Africa. The De Hoop dam is built on the Steelpoort river and according to former President Jacob Zuma the river will be used for two purposes: supply water to the towns, industries and poorly serviced rural communities in Sekhukhune, Waterberg and Capricorn district of the Limpopo province and secondly the dam will supply mines to help vast minerals deposits. When they started this project, they employed people from nearby villages to erect the dam Jacob Zuma (2014). Thaba Moshate casino and two malls (Tubatse crossing and Burgersfort mall) contributed to Burgersfort employment rate and to the economy of Burgersfort.
Awards
editThere is a college called Matthews Phosa College which is located with Burgersfort CBD. The College was among the recent winners of the golden awards at the Eisteddfod choir competitions. The prestigious college alongside the best in the province. Students were accompanied by their teachers to the Eisteddfod competition which various schools showcased their varied and distinctives talents. The school once obtained the highest pass rate in the country and the school have selected areas in which to develop and pursue learner’s skills that will contribute to the community of Burgersfort.
Television
editIt was reported that Burgersfort community are mining illegal chrome and they have shipped chrome that worth millions of rand, with the blessing of local headmen and government was powerless to stop the plunder because they claim that the reasons of their action is because of unemployment and this was the only way to put bread on the table. According to the mining expert estimated illegal mining already have extracted 360 000 tons of chrome with an estimated value of R500 million. To get a stake in the chrome rush one need to pay once off amount of R250 000 into the community trust made up of headmen, their councils and community members. Sometimes they hire members of the community for salary of R3500 to R4000 to do general work. Though department of mineral resources were aware about this illegal-mining since 2015, according to the spokeswoman Ayanda Shezi (2016), had visited the site to try to stop the activity from continuing.
