IMTIAZ ALAM HANFI
Former Governer State Bank of Pakistan , Imtiaz Alam Hanfi was born on January 6, 1929 in Allahbad,India. He was the second of four brothers born to Sifaat Alam Hanfi and Imtiaz-un-nissa. His father worked for the East Indian Railways and his mother was a stay at home mom. He went to CAV school in Allahbad and later went to EUING Christian College Allahabad. At the time of partition his whole family migrated from India to Pakistan in November 1947. His dad got a job in Pakistan Railways and Mr. Mr.Imtiaz Alam Hanfi went to Karachi University and got his masters degree in economics in 1952. He joined the State Bank of Pakistan in 1952and worked there till 1981. He got married to Razia khatoon in 1953,together they had 4 kids. He switched jobs and moved to PICIC in 1981 and worked there till 1984 when he was appointed the deputy governer of State Bank of Pakistan. In August 1988 he was appointed as the Governer of State Bank of Pakistan . He was the first governer to be appointed from within the bank. In December 1989 he resigned and joined a private group for a short time but again the government appointed him as the governer of the central bank in 1990. He was the first person to be appointed as governer of State Bank of Pakistan twice. this time he served for 3 years . He retired in 1993 Mr Hanfi joined Faisal bank as an advisor and later became the CEO of Faisal bank in 1994. He worked as the CEO of Faisal bank till 1998 and again worked as an advisor til 1999. He took a much needed break from work in 1999 and enjoyed retired life at home with his family. In December 1999 governement appointed him as chairman of Commssion for elimination of ribah, the job of this commsssion was to create a report on how to eliminate interest from the banking system in Pakistan. In July 2002 he finished his job by submitting the report to the government.
Currently, he is member of board of diretors of Bank al Habib. Mr Hanfi has one son and three daughters .. Hamid Imtiaz Hanfi, Zahida Zafar, Farhana Siddiqui and Hena Imtiaz Hanfi. Mr Hanfi resides in his house in Karachi with his wife , son , daghter in law and 4 grandsons.
