MTC’S WHOOPING SPONSORSHIP TO NESTOR TOBIAS’S BOXING ACADEMY

History-Who’s MTC?

edit

MTC (Mobile Telecommunications Limited) was established in 1995 as a joint venture between Namibia Post and Telecommunications Holdings (NPTH), Telia and Swedfund[1]. During May 2004, NPTH concluded a deal that saw it hold 100 per cent of the shares in MTC by acquiring the 49 per cent held by Telia Overseas AB and Swedfund International AB. NPTH is 100 per cent owned by the Government of the Republic of Namibia. On 1 September 2006 the sale of 34% of MTC shares to Portugal Telecom (PT) was concluded with the management contract also ceded to PT.

SPONSORSHIP TO THE BOXING ACADEMY

edit

WINDHOEK – Namibia’s leading boxing school, the Nestor Sunshine Tobias Boxing & Fitness Academy, became the chief beneficiary of a whopping sponsorship of N$7.5 million after telecommunications giant MTC resolved to join hands with the academy for the next three years[2].

Why did MTC decide to sponsor boxing?

edit

Ekandjo said that MTC recognizes the role sports play in society and that is why it has chosen boxing as the next beneficiary, adding that Nestor Tobias' academy has brought credit to Namibia over the past few years, by transforming boxing from an amateur sport into a well-noted and well-received brand throughout Namibia and Africa[3]. Since its inception in 2000, the Nestor Sunshine Tobias Boxing & Fitness Academy has managed to produce more than 75 national champions, 34 Zone Six champions, 11 Commonwealth boxers and 4 Olympic boxers, while it has also successfully managed to make inroads internationally with the likes of Paulus 'Hitman' Moses, Paulus 'The Rock' Ambunda, Bethuel 'Tyson' Uushona, Wilberforce Shihepo and Immanuel 'Prince' Naindjala among others - all being international champions and world class boxers.
