Introduction

Steam Engine is a card game engine. It outlines the rules for the basic game and gives guidelines for the creation of new card sets and rules variants.

Cards

edit

Steam Engine cards fall under one of 4 categories: Characters, Objects, Locations, and Events. When you play a Character, Object or Location card, it remains in play until something causes it to be removed. When you play an event card, it is never considered "in play", it is presented, its effects occur, and it is sent to the discard pile. The 3 type of permanent cards are only played during your own turn. Most Event cards are only played during your own turn, but some specifically state that they are to be played in response to another card being played, and as such these may be played during your opponent's turn.

Turn sequence

edit

There are several things you can do during your turn. You can do as many or as few as you're able, and you may do them in any order. During your turn, you may:

  • play one Character card
  • play one Object card
  • play one Location card
  • play one Event card
  • draw enough cards from your deck to bring your hand up to your current handsize limit
  • electively discard one card from your hand

At the end of your turn, if you have more cards in your hand than your handsize limit, you must choose and discard enough cards to comply with the limit.
