editThe Cucurbita argyrosperma situation is a little unusual for synonym lists in wikipedia because the synonyms needed aren't listed exactly at the one TPL link. It is necessary to click on both the Cucurbita argyrosperma Huber link and the Cucurbita argyrosperma subsp. argyrosperma link. That situation reflects uncertainty in the taxonomy, that some synonyms are considered to match the species, but for some reason are not considered or not known to match the autonymous subspecies. There is clearly considerable uncertainty about the taxonomy of this species.
Of the sources that TPL uses, WCSP is by far the most reliable but it is incomplete.
GRIN is very good for agricultural plants and weeds, but it has fallen rather behind with updates.
IPNI, structure not good for wiki
Tropicos -- don't use it
- WT:PLANTS, there's a section on the project page discussing synonyms that in my opinion is still a draft that is being tested.
Some databases don't have an appropriate approach for what some wikipedia editors have tried to use them for. For example,
- Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Plants/Archive53#The_Plant_List has the first mention of TPL, Dec 2010
- There was more discussion of synonyms around July 2011 and in September and November that eventually led to the draft discussion of synonyms on the project page.
- Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Plants/Archive59#Tropaeolum when wiki started taking TPL seriously
- Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Plants/Archive58#Cucurbita_argyrosperma_(Cucurbita_mixta), good info on C. argyrosperma and C. mixta, Mar 2012
