The Regal Cinema, designed by Archibald Hurley Robinson,[1] first opened on 10th October 1932 screening George Arlis and Bette Davis in "The Silent Voice".[2] The cinema ran continuously for 70 years, but closed on May 1st, 2003.
When the site was put up for sale in 2000, amid concern that the town would lose its only cinema, the Regal Trust was formed
After extensive restoration, the Regal Cinema began screening major films again in December 2009.[3] It is a Grade II listed building. [4] Robinson was responsible not only for several public buildings in an advanced mixture of classical and Art Deco styles, but also for 55 other cinemas.[4] The Regal is one of the few surviving, and the most important architectural example.[5] In 2009 the Regal signed a deal with Universal Studios to show all their films. It also serves as a community arts centre, offering a programme that includes music and stand-up comedy.[6]
