Giesenkirchen
Giesenkirchen is a district of Mönchengladbach in the region Niederrhein and belongs to the eastern part of the city. Up to the 22nd October 2009 it was a separate borough of Mönchengladbach. Previously belonged to the place Rheydt, which was consolidated in 1975 with Mönchengladbach. On 30 June 2007 it had a total of 15 853 inhabitants in Giesenkirchen. Of this total, 9130 live in the district of Giesenkirchen Center, 4431 in North Giesenkirchen and in [Schelsen] 2292.
History
editIn documents can be shown that the place name Giesenkirchen in 1150 has been called the first time. These certificate is now in the Historical Archive of Cologne. It is reported here by a donation from the so-called "Tenth of neugerodetem country," which makes the provost of St. Gereon in Cologne, the Church of Giesenkirchen with the condition that in the future, small repairs to the roof of the Church will be paid by the parishioners.
Until October 1794, when the french troops arrived, Giesenkirchen, Zoppenbroich and Horst belonged to the Electorate of Cologne. Dycker-Schelsen belonged to the Imperial of Dyck.
By the rule of the French, the boundaries between the existing territorial institutions were abolished for all time.
