The Comic
editHistory
editThe SuperFogeys grew out of a suggestion that Heasley received while keeping his MySpace blog, From Behind the Light. After Heasley posted a few comic strips, one reader suggested that he "do something like old superheroes in a nursing home.[1] " Heasley began writing SuperFogeys in 2006[1], and began publishing them on DrunkDuck in 2007 [2]. In 2008, Heasley began publishing Chapter 5 of SuperFogeys simultaneously on www.superfogeys.com and DrunkDuck[3] , but starting with Chapter 6, SuperFogeys became available exclusively on www.superfogeys.com [4]
In 2009, Heasley began publishing SuperFogeys: Origins. These stories, written by Heasley and drawn by other webcomic artists, focus on the SuperFogeys characters' lives before the main storyline began. Heasley began the Origins storylines in order to respond to frequently asked questions about the SuperFogeys' origins. [5]

Influences
editReligion
editBrock Heasley, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has occasionally alluded to Mormonism in SuperFogeys. Notable references include the character Swifty, who was modeled after former Church President Gordon B. Hinckley [8]; the inclusion of the Book of Mormon in a stack of religious books presented to the character Tangerine[9]; and the origin story of Captain Spectacular and Doctor Rocket, which takes place during the Babylonian invasion of Jerusalem around 588 BC, an event that also serves as the backdrop for the First Book of Nephi in the Book of Mormon[10]. However, Heasley has stated that he does not consider SuperFogeys to be "a vehicle to spread [his] religious beliefs [10]."
Family
editTwo of the characters in SuperFogeys, Dictator Tot and Cami, are modeled after Heasley's two daughters. [11][12] While Dictator Tot's appearance is the only thing inspired by Heasley's daugher Elora, the character Cami is named after Heasley's daughter, who, like her fictional counterpart, is hypotonic.
