TRADITIONAL PROFESSIONS OF GOUNDERS

   The Gounders had a large variety of traditional professions ranging from agriculture, land-owning, hunting to being brave warriors.

Most of the Gounders were prosperous and owned land. Gounders are also known as Kongu Vellalars

and the Vellalars is a name derived from ‘vellam’ and ‘anmai’, meaning cultivation which was a key occupation. It also means 'lords of the floods'. Even today, many Gounders own a lot of land and are prosperous agriculturists.

A sect of Gounders known as Vettuvan Gounders took their name from Vettuvan meaning hunter. Their profession was hunting game.

During the era of the Chola empire, they were warriors who supported the Cholas and the Cheras during the wars. This brave race won many wars. They did not shirk from aggression.

Today, Gounders have entered virtually every sphere from agriculture, engineering, business, IT to politics and have excelled.
