He was once taken by the Japanese government in his firm and commissioned as a foreman.

During the Japanese war in 1945 he and his family hid in Kg. Ban for five months. He did so after hearing the news of the Japanese arresting and killing the English-speaking people. Therefore, in living in an emergency, he had to walk at night by using buffalo to transport rice and other foodstuffs from Keningau.

On 17th July 1946 he was appointed "Native Officer" in the Keningau district after the Japanese army surrendered to the Allies by the British Colony Government.

Bitter Memories - After completing his course in England, he and a German student boarded a train to Vienna. In Vienna he was detained by the Russians because Russia described him as a spy and he only had a 'British Passport'. He then explained his purpose to the United Kingdom and stated it came from North Borneo. Then the Russian army took a world map and showed the location of Borneo. He was later released after 4 hours of investigation. He was lucky because he was not from the white race, otherwise he would have been taken prisoner and taken to the ‘Siberian Labor Camp’.
