This is where you will compile the bibliography for your Wikipedia assignment. Add the name and/or notes about what each source covers, then use the "Cite" button to generate the citation for that source.

Southeast Asian coral reefs

I am planning on adding a separate section named "Thailand". I will briefly introduce the topic of corals in Thailand by mentioning bleaching events but I will focus on the damage being caused by tourism and the restoration that in response to both bleaching and tourism related harm. I feel like focusing on tourism and efforts to resolve and rebuild from this problem is narrow enough for a Wikipedia page. If I focus too much on one place in Thailand such as the Koh Tao islands I am limiting myself to only one or two references. I have started my draft in Sandbox using the top 5 articles in my list. I have moved the talk sections to the bottom of the page for the sake of cleaning up the bibliography.

  1. Sutthacheep, Makamas; Yucharoen, Mathinee; Klinthong, Wanlaya; Pengsakun, Sittiporn; Sangmanee, Kanwara; Yeemin, Thamasak (2013-11-01)[1]
    • Explain why I selected this source: Sutthacheep is a biology researcher and faculty member at Ramkhamhaeng University in Thailand. They have an expertise in coral reef ecology. This specific article talks about specific bleaching events on Gulf of Thailand while proposing what these events can tell us about the future of corals in this area. I plan on using this source to provide a little bit of background on coral death before I can talk about coral restoration efforts.
    • [This is a good source as it helps you identify some key bleaching events. See if we can use these events to track the following restoration efforts Hieup (talk)hieup]
  2. Yeemin, Thamasak, Makamas Sutthacheep, and Rattika Pettongma. "Coral reef restoration projects in Thailand." Ocean & coastal management 49, no. 9-10 (2006): 562-575.[2]
    • Thamasak Yeemin is a biologist at Ramkhamhaeng University in Bangkok, Thailand and has been cited for their work on coral in several of the other sources that I have looked at. I plan on using this source to begin discussion on the negative impacts of tourism on corals and the recognition of the economic value of coral for this industry.
    • [This is a good source, esp. its section on youth education & suggestion for the coral restoration in the Andaman Sea Hieup (talk)hieup ]
  3. Seenprachawong, Udomsak (2016)[3]
    • Seenprachawong is a member of the school of economics at the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) in Thailand. I like this source because it presents the economic perspective on coral reefs and why restoration is economically worthwhile. I will use this article to talk about some of the policy being considered as a way to curb the threats caused by tourism on the reefs off of the Phi Phi Islands.
  4. Hess, Janto S. "Private sector climate change adaptation of accommodation suppliers in the small island of Koh Tao, Thailand." Asian Geographer (2021): 1-18.[4]
    • Check the discussion on coral reef in this source. It can provide a counterargument to the sources on coral restorations that you've had.
  5. Hein, Margaux Y., Fanny Couture, and Chad M. Scott. "Ecotourism and coral reef restoration." Coral reefs: tourism, conservation and management. Earthscan Oceans, Oxford(2018).
    • Explain why we should select this source: I'm suggesting this source because Hein is an active scholar of coral restoration. She has conducted research in Thailand and Indonesia (Check her LinkedIn profile). I first found her work through a Google Scholar search with a combination of key words: Coral reef restoration Thailand community. One of the returning results is: Hein, Margaux Y., Alastair Birtles, Bette L. Willis, Naomi Gardiner, Roger Beeden, and Nadine A. Marshall. "Coral restoration: Socio-ecological perspectives of benefits and limitations." Biological Conservation 229 (2019): 14-25.[5] A good detail I've learned from this source is that there's a well-establish coral restoration program based in Thailand, New Heaven Reef Conservation Program (Koh Tao, Thailand) - the website of this program is worth checking out. However, you might not want to use this source since you need to extract the fine information about Thailand (Their discussion on community participation is good though). In the bibliography of this article, I found an article by Hein which focuses only on Thailand and the Maldives, and this is source #6 listed here. Hieup (talk) 20:39, 13 March 2022 (UTC)hieup
    • Citation: This source is a book chapter without DOI#. Hence, you can generate a citation by inputing the title of this article. Hieup (talk) 20:39, 13 March 2022 (UTC)hieup
    • To download this source, you will need to obtain it through our U-M libraries. Here is the link. Hieup (talk) 20:39, 13 March 2022 (UTC)hieup
  6. Boström-Einarsson, Lisa, Russell C. Babcock, Elisa Bayraktarov, Daniela Ceccarelli, Nathan Cook, Sebastian CA Ferse, Boze Hancock et al. "Coral restoration–A systematic review of current methods, successes, failures and future directions." PloS one 15, no. 1 (2020): e0226631.[6]
    • Although you might not cite this source for your Wikipedia piece, sources like this are helpful. The date of publication is new. It includes a visual map that highlights coral restorations in Thailand. The most useful part is probably the list of key methods of coral restoration. Citation #72 lists Yeemin, which is the lead author of two sources you've already found. This is good news. That means, we can rely on Yeemin's work as a clue to identify further sources.
  • Do you plan to add a separate section re: Thailand, or to edit the section "Contribution to management", or to add a section on coral restoration? Currently, I find that the literature on this topic shows that most concerns have focused on technological approaches. I wonder if we can find any materials about empowering local communities in coral restoration efforts. Hieup (talk)hieup
  • One of the problems in coral restoration in Thailand is to regulate tourism and fishing activities. Overall, the key task you want to focus is to narrow the topic - for instance, you might want to only focus on the problem of Koh Tao, Thailand. Hieup (talk)hieup
  • Ginger, I've added one more source below and provided detailed explanations why I think it'd be a good source. Use this format as a way to evaluate sources in the future. Here are the next steps: 1) Clean up your bibliography by bringing the sources you will use to the top of the list. I suggest you focus on using source #4, 2, 5, 6. 2) Start to work on your Draft in your Sandbox Draft. Make sure you've carefully read the guide on your Sandbox Draft how to copy and paste materials in this sandbox. Hieup (talk) 20:43, 13 March 2022 (UTC)hieup
