Origin of the term 'flurbius'

edit

The author's username is derived from the word flurb (v) meaning to insert a small cardboard cylinder (flurbing) in the end of a cigarette so that it can be more easily smoked without the risk of burning ones lips. Flurbing, flurb and flurbed were first used by some students at James Cook University of North Queensland, Townsville, Queensland, Australia in 1994. The use of these terms had a brief, localised popular and has apparently fallen into disuse.

Reasoning

edit

When the author first heard it (1994) he chose it as an internet alias that he would be able to use ubiquitously online. The author conjectured that it would be rare, possibly unique and thus save countless tribulations having to come up with, and subsequently remember usernames for every online service that he wanted to use. The technique proved successful in that the author has never had to devise any other username nor does he have any trouble remembering usernames for over a hundred different online services.[1]
