The experience in Nicaragua

Interested since childhood in the missionary action, she began the course of studies in Medicine and Surgery at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, with the ideal of helping the victims of the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua. As soon as she graduated, in 1983, she took part in a civil volunteer program of the MLAL (Lay Movement for Latin America), a non-governmental organization. With her husband she began working in the hospital of Matagalpa, a town in the heart of Nicaragua, where she spent most of her time devoting herself to pediatric vaccination. Later she moved to Terrabona, a town further south, towards Managua, where she shared the experience with other young European volunteers.

In February 1984, her separation from her husband led her to return temporarily to Italy. Resumed her work in Matagalpa, in 1986 she was sent by MINSA (Ministerio de Salud de Nicaragua) to the Fidel Ventura hospital in Waslala, in central Zelaya. She manages the departments of obstetrics, gynecology, emergency surgery and the maternal and child health program. Here she becomes a mutilating doctor, dealing with recomposing disfigured bodies and amputating limbs.

In 1988, after completing the revolution in Nicaragua, Chiara Castellani participated intensely in a project for the integral development of the territory and the solidarity initiative she launched reached Italy through religious communities.
